Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Comments not appearing!!?!?!!

I must say, I'm quite anxious about the comments not appearing for new shows these days. The reason being, I'm under the impression Cliff one-starred me again on my new Barton '81 matrix. I was hoping his comment would appear, as I suspect, so I can really shred him this time around and make him wish he never one-starred any of my matrixes. The level of demon possession that has taken over Cliff's mind these days is both staggering and frightening, and I can only hope he sees the light of truth before it's too late. In any case, seeing that Barton has not appeased Cliff (as I suspect), I got a new Hampton '81 matrix coming here that I'm sure he'll enjoy, so I'm optimistic right now about Cliff's future release from the shackles of woe.

All the best,

hunter

Hey Hunter! Your work is incredible! Thank you for doing SO MUCH to further our listening enjoyment. For every cantankerous Cliff, there are many more that can and do enjoy the latter era shows that you have put a lot of your time into.

I've got a little story that I want to share with you. After the Furthur show in Amherst this past February, my friends and I were wandering around Shakedown looking for some party treats and chatting it up with kind strangers. I walked up to this older man wrapped in a blanket sitting on his car with the hatchback up, blasting an IKYR of very high quality. We get to chatting and he's telling me about his plans to build a subwoofer box for his trunk to improve Phil bomb enjoyment and how he's replaced all the speakers in the vehicle with the highest quality stuff because he spends so much time driving and listening to GD. I thought that was really cool because everyone I know who has subs in their car is a hip-hopper and I told him so. We were about to walk away because he didn't have any treats for us, and he's like, "Hey Man, Do you know about these Matrix recordings? I've been REALLY enjoying them lately!". Of course I did and we shared a moment of joy, knowing that the music is only getting more widespread and only improving in quality!

So once again, Hunter, thanks for all that you do! Know that there are many out there enjoying your fine creations so please don't stop - I know there are many more sweet matrices to come!

I'm glad to share my positive experience! I haven't given this matrix a spin yet as I'm neck deep in a fascination with Tinariwen (http://www.tinariwen.com/). Not sure if you are into this sort of stuff, but I think a lot of people here could really appreciate their music and story.

EDIT: I realized this hijack with a query about MVernon was misplaced...my bad. He'll take up his efforts again when he can, I am sure, and this thread should have been focused on giving you your well deserved due for all the great work you have done (and will continue to do).

So, another (!) big fat MY BAD for insensitivity; the good news is that lots of folks have chimed in appropriately to express their gratitude.

If we added up all the folks that didn't appreciate my efforts around here, which are NOTHING compared to you, it would be a literal mountain next to the molehill of one, and only one, less than satisfied customer (though I understand your angst over just why you have to endure even that).

...hunter, I do appreciate your work/efforts (even mtrx's, though forgive me for saying "objectively speaking" as I spend all my time in the early era, and with CREAM of late), and that of all like-minded individuals that do us all such a great service...Advice FWIW: CLIFF may have you right where he wants you...pissed off (though I think that applies more to "posters" rather than individuals like you that are "makers of shows that get posted", so it may just be he's that hard to please)...

If Cliff's attitude is basically, "Only way to please me, just get down and leave and walk away," I find this to be antithetical to the communal aspirations of Deadheads, where we should support other Deadheads in their sincere efforts to furthur the experience of the music. The matrix format is a legitimate and accepted means of doing this, and I have striven to make only the highest quality matrixes. Because I have had, at least initially, great respect for Cliff Hucker and his contributions to this community, this blatant aggression on his part has left me feeling downtrodden by one of the best and brightest, as it were. The gracious support of other Deadheads, though, like William Tell, has helped heal these wounds of "boot-heels in the face" and made me feel there still is hope after all for this community at LMA. Anyway, I just don't see how Cliff's actions are in alignment with the true Dead spirit, and that worries me more than it should.

I hear you...Though CLIFF and I bonded some yrs ago over the early era shows, we do differ a bit with respect to proper posting protocol if you will (though I am sure many view me as a snobbish, know-it-all scientist hijacking the board to discuss inappropriate topics, so we all have our faults). I also squirm at his "extreme approach to criticism" for matrx shows, and latter era DEAD in general, feeling like you, that even if it's not for me, there are plenty here that like and enjoy those yrs, AND the kind of shows you make...so, again FWIW, I'd take those many good compliments you rec' to the bank, and as Bill (UUnk) mentioned, just accept he's (CLIFF) not going to be satisfied...

Hang in there, and keep up the good work; I bet SDH, BD#2, CCity and a few others will just love to stream this show ASAP.

You obviously do not know the magnitude of the "free space" in my head..."billions and billions of cubic cm" comes to mind (cue "Sagan voiceover" there...).

Hunter, many of us have experienced Cliff's "boot heel to the face" for one reason or another. And though it is true that Cliff may be "one of the best and brightest, as it were", he can be one of the most cantankerous as well. As stated by Sir William, the work done by you and many others is greatly appreciated. Sadly you can't possibly please everyone, and often it is the "displeased" who are vociferous.

don't worry about what he says man. Lots of people obviously appreciate your efforts. I don't always download your shows but ONLY because those aren't always my favorite years to listen to, or because in the case of something like 7-8-78 I prefer the crisp SBD but this has nothing to do with you at all. But there's definitely times where the SBD is too flat and when done right Matrixes ROCK! I'm looking forward to listening to your 5-16-81, that show is PERFECT for one imo, the huge boom of Shakedown can't truly come across on the SBD, and the AUD is a little boomy, your matrix sounds great. Thanks for all your effort, there are a TON of people that love and appreciate your efforts, don't let one curmudgeon get you down or worse ruin it for everyone that appreciates what you're doing.

This is HSeamons' latest matrix. He synchronizes the SBD and AUD sources to create a fuller sounding recording that gives life to the SBD by incorporating crowd energy, hall acoustics, etc.. thereby making it a more accurate representation of the GD concert sound.

Just like they used to do with live albums? Like Get Yer Ya Yas Out? Didnt they do the same thing there? Whats the downside? Sorry for all the ?s. Just curious.

The downside is that it can easily sound worse than the original recording, due to poor sync or mixing. When done well, a matrix sounds better than the original recording, audience hooting and all. Of course, this is a matter taste when it comes down to it.

I opt for making original live recordings sound better and more dynamic. Many matrixes out there have been considered an "upgrade" in sound experience. The best way to determine their quality is to give em a try. Some are better than others.

I really appreciate your work, hseamons. I guess we all have the right to one-star (or five-star) whatever show we like. Why anyone would complain about the availability of new and unique sources here is beyond me. Thanks!

GD's Europe 72 and the RS's Get Yer Ya Ya Ya's Out were both overdubbed in the studio. I am not sure about these albums but for sure during the recording of Live/Dead they set up microphones in the audience to get some of that juicy reverb and echo.

Dan Healy made his own matrix recordings (found here as Healy Ultramixes) from the soundboard.

From a technical standpoint, the matrix recording probably provides a fuller spectrum of the musical frequencies generated at the show to be heard. You get the clarity of the soundboard with the natural acoustic feel of sound travelling and bouncing around the hall. From an enjoyment standpoint, people who don't like crowd noise may be annoyed, though less so than with pure AUDs.

I do admit that the 3-23-74 matrix made me want to reach for the SBD because there was somebody clapping along right next to the mic during the very quiet build-up of the second Morning Dew solo. That was very annoying during such a pristine piece of music.

Thanks for the info deadpolitics and to you hseamon. I have not listened to a matrix yet that I am aware of. But none the less it is admirable that your love of the band goes above and beyond just sitting on your ass and listening like me.
